Eligibility
Learn more about who Base2Summit is designed for and whether the experience may be a good fit for you.
Who is eligible to go to Base2Summit?
Base2Summit is for young adults who have been diagnosed with cancer and are currently between the ages of 18 and 39.
To attend, you’ll need to be finished with active treatment at least three months before the first day of Base2Summit. Some exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis if you are living with chronic or advanced cancer.
I’ve been to another young adult camp. Can I still come?
Yes, you can still apply.
Priority is given to first-time participants, but we know every program is different. Sometimes, a fresh experience and a chance to recharge with people who “get it” is exactly what you need.
Is Base2Summit right for me?
If you’re a young adult who has navigated a cancer diagnosis and you’re ready to spend a week with others who understand that experience, Base2Summit may be a great fit for you.
The week may include activities that push you outside your comfort zone, so we encourage you to come with an open mind. You don’t have to be an expert adventurer. You just have to be willing to show up, try, connect, and give yourself space to “find your base and reach your summit.”
Cost & logistics
Here’s what to know about the structure, location, and practical details of the program.
How much does Base2Summit cost?
Nothing. Base2Summit is completely free to attend.
Our survivorship programs are all-inclusive, which means your airfare, transportation to and from the airport, lodging, food, activities, and gear are covered.
You may want to bring a little spending money, though. We usually head into town to explore the shops.
Where does the program take place?
Base2Summit is housed on a Lake in Northern Michigan.
What are the living arrangements?
Base2Summit takes place on a lake in Northern Michigan.
You’ll be part of a shared living experience, which means you’ll share a bedroom with others of the same sex. You’ll have your own bed, but it may be a bunk or an air mattress.
You may also have the option to sleep outside under the stars or in a tent. Waking up to the sunrise on the lake is something you may never forget.
How many people are in the house?
Group sizes can vary, but we typically have about 6 staff members and 10 to 12 participants.
We put a lot of thought into each group so the experience feels supportive, meaningful, and intentional.
Activities & Experience
Base2Summit includes a mix of outdoor adventure, wellness, connection, and time to rest.
What does “Wellness, Adventure, and Connection” mean?
Great question.
Wellness starts with how we care for your body and your spirit. Meals are thoughtfully prepared, locally sourced and organic when possible, and designed to give you something delicious and different to try. Each day has an international food theme, and we’ll always take dietary restrictions into account. You will not go hungry.
Wellness also includes quiet moments to reflect. Each day begins with time to set your own private intention and ends with a chance to celebrate what you accomplished.
Adventure is about your attitude as much as the activity itself. You can expect moderate outdoor activities each day. Depending on the week, that may include hiking, biking, swimming, boating, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, rock wall climbing, sailing, or other outdoor experiences.
Our lodge and activities are in rural locations, so you should be prepared for uneven terrain and changing weather. We’ll support you along the way, and we encourage you to approach each experience with curiosity and an open mind.
Connection is about you and the community you’ll build during the week. You’ll be surrounded by people who have walked a similar road and understand parts of your experience that can be hard to explain.
We ask everyone to honor their own needs while also respecting the group as a whole. In the house, we live by a common code of respect for yourself and for each other.
What kinds of activities are included?
Activities may include hiking, biking, swimming, boating, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, rock wall climbing, or sailing. Because the lodge and adventures are in rural locations, participants should be prepared for uneven terrain and changing weather.
Medical forms & Approval
Learn what medical information is required, how approval works, and what needs to be completed before a participant’s spot is confirmed.
What medical forms are required?
When you apply, you’ll provide most of the information we need. We’ll also have a few additional questions for your oncologist and will need their consent.
After your application is tentatively approved, you’ll receive an invitation for your oncologist to complete the final forms. These forms must be completed by your primary oncology team and sent directly to us by email or fax.
The invitation will include specific instructions, timelines, and deadlines.
Please note: your spot in the house is not confirmed until we have those completed medical forms in our office.
Can I attend before the forms are complete?
No. A participant is not given a spot in the house until those required forms are received.
Travel
Find answers about flights, transportation, travel coordination, and what to expect once you’ve been approved to attend.
What happens after I’m approved?
Congratulations! Once you’re approved, our Travel Coordinator will reach out to help arrange your flight.
During the flight reservation process, we’ll ask for a credit card to keep on file. This would only be used if you cancel your trip for non-medical reasons and we are unable to recover the flight cost. We’ll share the full details in writing when you reach that step.
We prefer that participants fly, but we understand there may be special circumstances.
If you cannot fly for medical reasons, or if you live less than a two-hour drive from Northern Michigan, our Travel Coordinator will work with you to make sure you arrive at the house before the fun begins. CHSCF will reimburse you for gas after you arrive.
Please note that the only ground transportation we provide, outside of daily excursions, is transportation from the airport to the lodge and back. CHSCF does not cover luggage fees, so we encourage you to pack light. Laundry facilities will be available if you need them.
What if I can’t fly or live nearby?
If someone cannot fly for medical reasons or lives within about two hours of Green Lake, the travel coordinator can help make alternate arrangements. CHSCF reimburses gas after arrival at the house.
What transportation does CHSCF provide?
CHSCF provides airport-to-lodge and lodge-to-airport transportation, but does not cover luggage fees. Participants are encouraged to pack light and use laundry facilities if needed.
